Once more, Schwartz focused on the retelling folk tales and urban legends. Whatever the reason for the hiatus, Schwartz and Gammell fell right back into their ghoulish groove and delivered yet another great collection of scary stories and disturbing illustrations. Perhaps after scarring the kids of the 80's for life Schwartz and Gammell decided to wait for a bit before messing with the next generation. While it was only a three year wait between the first and second book, the third installment in the series came almost a decade later. Interestingly, this book was printed much later than the previous entry. The last book in Alvin Schwartz and Stephen Gammell's "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" is "Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones".

Fooled by randomness6/7/2023 Randomness can positively impact your life as much as it can negatively impact it. Things in life aren’t as optimized as we think. Sometimes, randomness enables you to enjoy perks you think you don’t deserve to enjoy. I learned that we are not as responsible for where we are in life as we think we are. This book had an unexpected impact on me. Taleb analyzes several situations where randomness intervenes without our noticing. The main thesis of the book is that we often underestimate the role of chance and randomness in life. This one is the first installment of The Incerto, Taleb’s series discussing randomness and asymmetry in life. Taleb used to work as a trader in New York. The book explores many situations where randomness should be taken into account more often and explains different principles related to that topic. It explains that randomness, because it is unseen, plays a much bigger role in life than we are ready to accept. Silent evidence prevents us from having an accurate vision of history.įooled by Randomness is a book written by Nassim Taleb. We cannot predict the future based on the past because the future is different. Randomness plays a much bigger role in life than we’d like to admit. The interview manuele fior6/7/2023 I say that despite the two female nudes featured in the first five pages. Second caveat: Picasso is known to have been a sexual harasser, sexual assaulter, and statutory rapist, but thankfully, Fior’s art is not infused with that same misogynist energy. And yet they meet the definition well: simplified (no depth-producing cross-hatched shadows, just the fewest pen strokes) and exaggerated (expressively stylized and so distorted contour lines instead of reality-reproducing ones). Late in his career, Picasso changed to minimalistic line drawings that no art critic has ever, to my knowledge, called “cartoons”. But some caveats: I mean “drawn” not “painted”. If that sounds like ridiculously high praise, it is. If Picasso had drawn comics, they might look like Manuele Fior‘s Red Ultramarine. Hop On Board by Nicholas A. Emily dickinson open me carefully6/5/2023 Aware of the contours of the paper, Dickinson wrote both with and against them” (Socarides 168). Bervin’s attention paid to the material economy of Dickinson’s writing on such a particular medium as recycled envelopes here reinforces Alexandra Socarides’ assessment of the ways in which the American writer’s poems generally relate to their surfaces of inscription: “Dickinson is a writer,” the scholar argues in the conclusion of her study of Dickinson’s material poetics, “who invites us to look at her paper in part because she explicitly writes about how it shapes what she has to say. 1 In her introduction to The Gorgeous Nothings -a selection of poems written on envelopes by Emily Dickinson in the later part of her life, falling into a category of texts still known to many Dickinson scholars as “scraps”-visual artist and poet Jen Bervin reminds us quite relevantly that “Dickinson’s envelope writings convey a sense of New England thrift and their relationship to the larger household economy of paper, but they also disclose private spaces within that household.
